Giliw-Elo Rating System

Track, Improve, and Compete — Your Official Chess Rating Platform

📈 How the Initial Ratings Were Determined

The foundation of the Giliw-Elo Rating System was inspired by the rating practices used in Baguio City chess tournaments, one of the most active and competitive chess communities in the Philippines. When the system was first established, all existing player ratings were carefully gathered from available tournament records, club score sheets, and verified match results.

🧩 Adapting the Baguio Rating Standard

Players who already had an established rating from local Baguio tournaments were assigned their corresponding Elo values. These records became the benchmark for the first version of the Giliw-Elo database.

For players without prior ratings, a universal initial rating of 1500 was assigned. This serves as a fair starting point — representing the average chess skill level and ensuring that everyone begins on equal footing.

⚖️ Monthly Rating Reset Rule

To promote fairness and encourage consistent improvement, the system applies a unique rule:

At the end of every month, any player with a rating below 1500 will be reset to 1500.

This ensures that occasional losses don’t permanently penalize players and that everyone maintains a fair and motivating baseline rating each month.

♟️ Why This System Works

This setup keeps the rating environment balanced and active. Regular players naturally rise above 1500 as they gain experience, while new or inactive players maintain a competitive entry point. It also prevents long-term rating deflation and promotes healthy competition.
