What is an Elo Rating System?
The Elo Rating System is a proven mathematical method to measure a player's chess skill. Developed by Arpad Elo, it updates your rating after every game β rewarding performance consistency and fair competition.
Your rating goes up when you perform better than expected, and goes down when you perform below expectations. This makes Elo the most objective and trusted way to track improvement in chess.
The Elo Formula
E = 1 / (1 + 10((Ropp β Rplayer) / 400))
Ξ = K Γ (S β E)
Rnew = Rold + Ξ
Ξ = K Γ (S β E)
Rnew = Rold + Ξ
- Rplayer β Your current rating
- Ropp β Opponentβs rating
- S β Score (1 = Win, 0.5 = Draw, 0 = Loss)
- E β Expected score
- K β Development factor (typically 10β40)
